Contemporary Show Garden with Simple Foliage in Flower Borders Space

Category: Contemporary, Modern & Artistic

Garden Design Project: CONOSS001

This is the creation of a modern Contemporary garden in a small typical garden located in Southampton comprising of turf, Flower Borders and shrubs.

3d Show Garden Plan

Its rectangular shape potentially could allow some interesting work but comprised of a small Patio, leading to a large lawn area with a few dug in Flower Borders.

Before

The garden itself was very uninspiring and had very few points of interest.

The client of this garden was limited to a budget but wanted to create a Space that was clever in its design.

They wanted an area that had a lot of greenery in it whilst still being modern in its function.

Foliage

Plants were the main priority here and the client wanted a lot of plants cleverly plotted around.

They had a long list of favourites and would like to get as many of these in as possible.

They also didn’t want to have a garden that had everything on show.

Foliage

They wanted to be taken for a walk around it where they would see new things on their journey.

The last thing on their wish list was somewhere to sit with friends & family.

The bottom of the plot received the most of the afternoon and evening sun and would be the place for entertaining and barbeques.

Flower Borders

In Summary:

  1. An area away from the house to retreat to
  2. Planting that provides year round interest
  3. Much needed interest and structure
  4. Garden that grows - not an instant Show Garden
  5. Style that complements both clients – a: Contemporary b: Woodland/Plant Orientated

Creation of Space

What we managed to create in conjunction with the client was a garden that is split into 2 separate sections but is linked by repeating features.

The first of these areas is the woodland area that greets you as you walk straight out of the kitchen.

The second section is at the bottom of the garden and is more of a Contemporary area.

Contemporary Garden

As the garden matures and plants develop, the woodland section will screen off the Contemporary social area.

Deck Path provides the element of interest and intrigue as it forces you to walk around and see the plants.

As plants grow, this feature will improve as Foliage screens off the route.

Flower Borders

Garden Lighting provides focal points on specific plants such as fargesia’s and juncos and this will be fantastic as the sun sets.

Backbone planting will increase in size and hide the boundaries over time.

The Contemporary area at the back of the garden incorporates an L shaped seat with integrated storage.

This reduces any need for a shed and tidily hides the Garden Tools.

Garden Space

The seat and back Wall were rendered/painted white to reflect the sun that you get in late afternoon and keeps it as a warm Space.

The white smooth Fence also creates a perfect projector screen for the built in outdoor projector.

This is excellent for watching movies outside on a warm summers night.
