Circular Raj Green Sandstone with Cobbles - Driveways & Paving

Category: Driveways, Patio, Paving & Walls

Garden Design Project: DWSMPG002

The design brief for this garden was to remove all the grass and reduce the border size to create a low maintenance garden for this elderly couple.

They wanted to incorporate their existing blue bench and Summerhouse into the design.

patio

They had seen a previous design of mine incorporating stone circles and were keen to replicate this in some way into their garden.

This is the Garden layout plan resulting from two concept plans.

I have created these images from Vectorworks Landmark design software, these help to give confidence and reassurance to clients that they know what their new garden is going to look like before any construction work commences.

patio

Whilst the existing bench and summerhouse was to be incorporated into the design, the existing lawn needed to go and the borders had to be modified as they were to much hard work for the clients to keep maintained.

patio

The existing paved patio area was constructed with a riven paving and an existing dwarf wall was constructed with a Replica Stone.

Keeping in theme with this, so as not to introduce another material, we have used Raj Green Sandstone paving and cobbles and a Raj Green Sandstone 3.76m diameter, three ring circle; each ring was used in a different part of the design.

patio

Opposite to the existing dwarf walls we constructed new raised bed borders using new 2400mm x 300mm x 150mm tanalised softwood sleepers cut to a height of approximately 400mm and bedded vertically.

These are an ideal seat height where the client can tend the borders seated without having to bend down.

patio

As with most of my designs, I like to have some correlation between the property and the garden, with this in mind, each of the circles corresponds to a window or door on the house.

The centre of the main circle is aligned to the rear door and step, the circle to the right is aligned to the patio doors and the small circle to the left is aligned to the bedroom window.

patio

The bench is aligned to the kitchen window. This means that there is a focal point from every window or door that you look out of.

In the two borders either side of the bench, a weed suppressing membrane was laid and 20mm quartz gravel was laid over it at approximately 40mm deep.

patio

As you exit the rear door and step down onto the new garden from the existing steps you can walk around a large outer circle path, constructed with 100x100mm Raj Green Sandstone Cobbles, to the bench and seating area or around to the Summerhouse.

The summerhouse has been moved forward to create storage space and screened off with a tanalised paling fence and gate.

patio

Three Raj Green Sandstone stepping stones are positioned so that you can walk onto the inner sandstone circle; this means that you can navigate around the garden on a hard surface as opposed to walking through gravel.
