There are many materials available on the market and much debate on what is best. At Garden Design Pictures we are more interested in the design rather than debating, but project submitters will no doubt state their case as to why specific materials and finishes were used.

Patio The basic types of Driveway Materials are;

Solid-surface (i.e., smooth, seamless, even surfaces)
Aggregate-surface

Driveway Pavers could be somewhere in between these two main categories. The most popular options are in the first category. Surfaces include;

Aggregate Surfaces come in a variety of chippings, slates, stones and gravels. Often used where vehicles are not driven on, the materials used are ideal for those who seek a maintenance free garden.

Blocking has become one of the most popular paving landscaping material choice for domestic and commercial drives. Blocks are easy to take up and relay if any underground maintenance is required.

Concrete Paving is a manufactured product made of, you guessed it, concrete! Products are paved the same as patio slabs and there are a huge portfolio of designs available.

Pattern Imprinted Concrete can brighten your patio or driveway with a range of colours and patterns providing an infinite combination. It works by stamping moulds and adding colours into in-situ concrete and is billed as being a virtually maintenance free finish. You can create a unique design of your choice or many standard effects such as; patio

Asphalt is within the skills of most homeowners. The driveway is quite durable and suffers minimal cracks. However, asphalt may not be as durable in colder climates where the ground freezes below the surface. Asphalt itself is a mixture of aggregate, and it contains stones, sand and liquid asphalt cement.

Tar-and-Chip is probably a bit of an odd ball of the surface materials, although it is similar to asphalt. It certainly is attractive and durable but it is difficult to find contractors for installation. Tar-and-Chip tend to be less expensive than asphalt.
