Garden Fountains: Which Is Right for Your Garden?

Take a stroll through your local Garden Centre and you'll find that there are dozens of Garden Fountains, Water Walls and Waterfalls available for your Water Garden. Making a decision as to which will work best for your yard can be difficult, so it's best to have an idea of what you're looking for before you head to the Garden Centre.

Fountain Types

The perfect Garden Fountains will depend on the space you have, as well as any other Water Features. Here are a few of the more common types and where they will fit best.

Wall Fountains

Wall Fountain

These are best for small Spaces where there isn't enough room to place a standalone piece.

These are usually made of two pieces, a basin to catch the water and the spout. They both mount on the Wall and come in a variety of sizes and designs.

You can also find wall mount fountains designed to fit into corners for particularly small gardens.

The spout may be simply a pipe mounted on the wall, or you may choose something more decorative, such as a lion's head or cherub with a pail.

Standalone Fountains

The most commonly recognized fountain type is the standalone. This comes in many different forms, so which you choose will depend on your vision for the garden Space.

Standalone Fountain

The various standalone models can be divided into two types, those that sit in a Pool and those that are simply set in the Lawn.

The latter may be raised or start at the ground. The catch basin can be nearly any size, to create the look you are going for and they are often round, though other shapes can certainly be found.

Keep in mind that if you have pets, a lower basin will encourage them to drink and play in it, which may not be what you want.

Those fountains that sit in a Pool will not necessarily need a catch basin, since the Pool serves this purpose. Others will offer a small catch basin, with an overflow that falls into the pool.

While the most classical fountains may be tiered rounds, there are plenty of options to set off your garden. You'll find a wide variety at the Garden Centre to help you create the perfect Water Garden. From simple tiers to cherubs and Greek goddesses tipping water out of jugs, there's something for every style of garden. Some fountains will tend to be more whimsical, others classical, so choose the one that works best with your layout.

Other Water Features

Of course, not all Water Features for gardens are fountains. Water Walls are an increasingly popular type of garden features, where water is pumped up to the top of a small wall and allowed to trickle down it. Some walls are smooth, while others offer a bit of texture to play with the sunlight and create more of a bubbling brook sound.

Waterfalls

You will also find Waterfalls, which are similar to wall fountains but are usually set into Rocks to create the illusion of a natural fall.

These may be placed in the middle of the garden or against a wall, depending on your preference and usually accompany a Pond, as well.

Whether you choose Garden Fountains or Waterfalls for your Water Garden, your local Garden Centre will be able to provide you with everything you need to create the perfect space.

Garden Fountains add a lot to a Water Garden. Whether you choose a fountain, Water Walls, or Waterfalls and a Pond, you'll find that the sound of the water is soothing and can turn even the smallest of spaces into a relaxing sanctuary.
