Curved Garden Lawn with Raised Wall Beds for Low Maintenance Plants

Garden Makeover Project

This Garden was more or less a blank canvas – mostly Lawn. The clients are a busy professional couple with grown up children. They have little time or inclination for gardening and wanted a low maintenance outdoor area for relaxing and entertaining.

Raised Wall Flower Bed

The kitchen window looked out on a long, blank garage Wall which the client was particularly keen to add some interest to. It was not possible to plant directly into the ground in this area as a drainage pipe runs a few inches below the surface so I suggested raised Flower Beds to give the extra depth of soil needed as well as creating an attractive feature.

Curved Lawn

The plot is a narrow L-Shape and felt like it was split into two awkward areas. To bring the areas together I used sweeping curves to create a sense of movement and guide the eye smoothly around the corner.

Plants in Flower Bed

Tough Plants, including phormiums and bergenias were selected to provide year round structure and interest whilst requiring low maintenance.

Landscaping using Gravel

When the hard Landscaping was completed we all felt this area of the Garden looked a little harsh so some grasses and sedums were planted in the Gravel for a softer effect.

Paved Entertainment Area

A snaking Indian Sandstone path blends into the Gravel area, becoming random laid stepping stones. The stepping Stones lead through the Gravel to a matching Indian Sandstone feature Circle, acting as a dining area, and on to a shaded Bench on a Paved semi Circle.
