Mediterranean Terrace with Steel Pergola

This Mediterranean Terrace garden with a contemporary feel was hand drawn rather than using Vectorworks garden design software our preferred tool.

The medium sized town garden set in the heart of Richmond, incorporates a formal Mediterranean Terrace style with an unusual bespoke Water Feature, a space saving dining area and a generous children's play zone with soft screening.

The design had to encompass challenging level changes and tricky access issues.

This cross-section drawing illustrates the functional dining area. On the left, upper level access takes one through to the front garden.

The surrounding raised levels of lush planting gives diners a heady mix of colour and fragrance.

To create a good functional terrace, an initial high level of dig and waste removal was required. Despite the lack of easy access to the space this was completed swiftly with minimal disruption.

Then, with the construction of the retaining walls, paving and steps complete, just a few weeks later, our clients could really begin to appreciate the myriad facets of the garden's design.

Directly south facing, this sunny Mediterranean terrace appeals to all the senses, steeped in a romantic Mediterranean ambience of grey-green Olive trees, aromatic planting and trickling water.

At night, the illuminated water feature throws swirling patterns of light upward across the face of the rendered wall.

Dense and semi-mature planting provides 'instant effect'. A colour scheme of silver and burgundy combined with cool blues and mauves runs throughout the garden.

An element of intrigue and fun was added by incorporating metal shapes, powder coated, embedded in the surface of the rendered walls.

This unusual feature of hardscape detail adds to the character of the garden for a uniquely distinctive look.

The dining area, an important feature of a any Mediterranean terrace, sits in an alcove of raised flower beds filled with aromatic planting of Lavender and herbs to offer eye-level appeal to diners. Teak topped benches conceal practical storage facilities below, accessed by three hinged sections.

The planting was styled to appear natural, wild, dense and colourful with, amongst others, Eucomis, Heuchera and Hebes.

Despite the magnificent summer blooms, the informal planting scheme is actually quite low-maintenance.

Silver and burgundy evergreens, create structure and interest throughout the winter months.

The open steel structure of the pergola magically conjures up the 'internal' atmosphere of an 'outside' room, whilst remaining an almost invisible structure.

The burgundy foliage of the Acer in the foreground complements the rich copper-bronze tones of the neighbouring tree to unify the overall landscape impact.
