Landscaped Terraced Cobbles Using Railway Sleeper Retaining Walls

Category: Flower Bed Design

Garden Design Project: FBDYRK001

This project shows Terraced gardens of Cobbles creating a Maintenance Free garden.

Terraced Railway Sleeper Walls

The Client had a very steep front garden that was mainly all Lawn and was quite a task to mow.

We had already Landscaped 3 front gardens that were similar in his road.

So we came up with a variation on those other gardens but trying to give his something different as well.

Terraced Railway Sleeper Walls

We removed most of the grass and dug out the trenches where the Railway Sleeper Walls were going to be.

This design basically was set on a 45 degree angle to the property, so as to give the feel of depth to the garden.

Terraced Railway Sleeper Walls

Each Railway Sleeper was placed in the trenches and then stacked 2 high and then all nailed off using 150mm nails.

These needed to have pilot holes drilled in the sleeper as the sleepers were Azobe Hardwood.

Landscaped using Cobbles

We then back filled against Sleeper Walls with soil that was on site.

We had dug into the bank and therefore pulled this soil forward to create several tiers which we compacted and levelled flush with the top of the Sleeper Walls.

Landscaped using Cobbles

We then laid membrane over all of the Terraced areas and used 20mm shingle to cover with 60-80mm Cobbles were then placed in several piles.

Then we planted using several types of grasses and phormiums and also ground cover juniperus.

The client has really noticed the difference in work involved in looking after the front garden now and is very happy even 2 years on.
